Dreaming About Flying

"This...is an adventure."

-From Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

Adventure: a bold, usually risky, undertaking; hazardous action of uncertain outcome.

Adventure calls out to us.

We, as human beings, do not want to settle for less than our full potential, yet somehow we find ways to do just that.

We Settle.

We find ourselves wishing for lives greater than what we have, but are laying down waiting for excitement to find us. We sit on the couch and occasionally walk over to the front window, peaking through the blinds to see if today is the day.

"Maybe today will today be the day, I go on an adventure."

The stories we are taught as children are full of adventure, and it is that spirit that should lead our lives in the present. We lost the excitement of Robin Hood, King Arthur, and all of the Biblical stories which have adventure. Most children's books tell stories of children accomplishing greatness beyond their vision. They inspired us to be like them.

Our souls crave for a life that is lived. Our souls require us to be bigger than we truly are. Our souls require us to risk.

Inaction kills adventure.

Inaction pushes aside our desire to experience the world around us. A routine of doing nothing will only result in mere nothingness. Experience is necessary in order to live but a lack of it will cripple us. The fear of not having enough experience kills the drive.

Fear kills adventure.

-Five years old I climbed up on the wall
My mother warned me but it took no heed
Like all creatures great and small
I took a fall and found out I could bleed
Sometimes I feel like I'm drowning
Actually its more like most of the time
But every now and then when I am sleeping
I still have a dream that I'm flying
-Alexi Murdoch

When fear takes over, the only adventure you have will be in your dreams. You'll find yourself fighting alongside warriors such as William Wallace in Scotland or super heroes in Metropolis. You will dream of being someone else who runs from large boulders protecting his newfound treasure or fights Nazis with a whip and a revolver. You will dream you are someone brave and courageous but will never measure up to the greatness that is depicted.

Life happens quickly.

What happened to the child that wanted to climb every tree, jump every fence, and venture past the front yard to see the world?

What happened was this.

You fell out of that tree.

You didn't make it over the fence.

You found out how vast the world actually is.

You bled.

You froze.

You hid from yourself and said that it was time to grow up.

So why try?

Why risk it?

My life isn't worth the risk.

Your life isn't worth anything if you do not risk, if you do not take a chance, and if you do not experience.

You're life is an adventure, so stop peaking through the blinds and unlock your front door. Turn the handle and step through what is blocking your destiny. Take a step.

Embrace the calling your soul was meant to see through to the end. Embrace a life of uncertainty. Embrace your destiny.

Embrace adventure.

This(Life)...is an adventure."
